Part 2
Shorty fights desires such as drugs and murders people to survive in hope of reuniting with his twin sister. She was kidnapped in the same attack as his father was murdered in front of him, Shorty dedicates his life to find her. He apprentices himself to a proAristide gang leader and shoots his first man, at age 12. But this book not only talks about his life, he starts dreaming about another Haitian man named Toussaint 1'Ouverture that was a slave that turned revolutionary who managed to overthrow French control and live. He is a reluctant leader, but his thoughtfulness and his desire for the least bloody solution make him the kind of man who might succeed. Also ironically 200 years back when Toussaint was alive he also dreamed of a trapped young man during the future in Haiti.
